American Dissonance

May 28, 6:30pm

A Musical Dialogue

E pluribus unum. Out of many, one. This national motto of The United States of America celebrates the power of unity - that when we come together, we become something greater. Yet, in a time when many feel increasingly disconnected from each other, who we are as Americans has become an incredibly complex question to answer. Through a series of 20th century works for solo piano and classical saxophone, pianist Isaac Dorio, together with saxophonist Matthew Johnson, will explore the question of what it means to be an American through a curated set of repertoire that exemplifies the complexity of the American experience.

Special thanks to Renee Bialek at the Jewish Federation of Naples for helping make this performance a possibility!

Program:

Piazzola - Muerte del Angel (arr. Saxophone and Piano)

Copland - Piano Variations

Muczynski - Sonata for Saxophone and Piano

Banks - As I Am

Rzewski - Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues

Sweeney and Society

Transformation through Collaboration

This fall’s production of Sweeney will serve as a component of Isaac’s honors thesis that situates musical theater as a socially constructed field where meaning is negotiated between participants in an ongoing and evolving process of learning. Through anthropological research methods, Isaac will draw from intercollegiate collaborations across Cornell and Ithaca College and explore how interdisciplinary endeavors can foster collaboration and connection across differences and serve as a vehicle for social change.

Of course, a production like this is no small undertaking. On behalf of the entire production team, we would be so grateful for any small donation you could make to help our vision come to fruition. Use the button to the right to donate to our crowdfunding page and help us learn something new through the process of musical theater!
